What is Futures Academy?

Futures Academy is an online learning environment focused on foresight. The aim of Futures Academy is to deliver high-quality, relevant and easily understandable foresight-related skills to participants. The material is based on the latest foresight and futures studies knowledge. Skilled experts with a multiyear academic and practical background in the field of foresight have designed the course materials.

What is the purpose of Futures Academy?

Futures Platform’s Foresight Academy delivers high-quality, relevant and easily understandable foresight-related information and skills. The first published course on Futures Academy is ”Foresight Basics Course: Mastering Practical Foresight for Organisations, Institutions and Individuals”, where you can learn foresight methods with practical examples and exercises. After the course, the participants have developed skills to apply foresight in their respective fields. This will enable them to identify new opportunities and threats, create insights into the developing trends, discover weak signals, and, through the use of case studies and practical exercises, help them to apply foresight within their organisations.

What is included in the course?

The course is an online course which each participant can complete at their own pace. Participants of the course will receive a 27-page exercise workbook. Throughout the course, they will receive relevant tasks to perform in order to apply the learnings in practise. This way, the course prepares the participants to apply the methods they have learned throughout the course immediately in practise. The course’s exercises utilise Futures Platform’s collaborative foresight platform as a tool in some of the exercises. No other tools are needed to carry out the exercises. The time to complete the course is approximately 22 hours.

Experts behind the Futures Academy

The core members Futures Platform’s foresight and content team either hold a doctoral degree or have graduated from master’s programs focusing on futures studies and foresight. The company also utilises a growing number of external foresight and core competence experts, who have been carefully selected to ensure comprehensive and high-quality information content.

The team is led by Dr. Tuomo Kuosa, whose doctoral thesis (2009) addressed the question of how the methods of futures studies should be developed to better deal with the businesses’ challenges rising from the dynamic operational environment. Dr. Kuosa is the author of several books and research articles concerning the development and utilisation of foresight methods. With 15 years of experience working in the field of foresight, he has consulted various organisations in numerous countries.

The internal expert team is also supported by the Content Advisory Board, which consists of internationally renowned top foresight experts. The team is in regular contact with the board regarding content-related strategic questions concerning the quantity and quality of the phenomena. The three permanent members of the board are Professor Sohail Inayatullah, Gerard D. Drenth, and Dr John P. Geis.
